About Us
Since 2003, Mindful Man has evolved as a loose confederation of men (and friends) who teach a variety of Mindfulness practices. We are available for retreats, consultation or any support you may need in establishing or continuing a Mindfulness practice. We are:
DAVID HASKIN. A co-founder of Mindful Man, David has been a meditator for 45 years and has led men's groups for almost 30 years. He has been a student of Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh since 1993 and was ordained into Thich Nhat Hanh's core practice community, the Order of Interbeing, in 2006. David also has practiced regularly with teachers from the Insight Meditation Society since 1995. Besides Mindful Man, David also teaches in Wisconsin prisons as a founder of the Wisconsin Prison Mindfulness Initiative. He also teaches regularly to men and women in recovery and to community groups of men and women interested specifically in Buddhism. He lives and practices in Southwestern Wisconsin.
HAL DESSEL. A meditator since 1964, Hal is a psychotherapist in Milwaukee specializing in addictions and trauma recovery and relapse prevention. Mindfulness and 12-step recovery are central to both his professional and personal life. Hal has facilitated men's work for nearly 25 years.
STEVEN SPIRO. Steven is a Buddhist Chaplain in the Prajna Mountain Order and a core member of SnowFlower Sangha in Madison, Wisconsin. He facilitates Being With Dying activities and retreats, including Community Conversations on Death and Dying, and offers spiritual support for the dying and their loved ones. He teaches mindfulness meditation as a member of the Wisconsin Prison Mindfulness Initiative. He developed and teaches Breathing Earth Qigong as classes and in retreat settings. He is a wood sculptor, a Reiki Master, a grandfather, an organic gardener, and a dog lover.
PAUL NORTON. Paul is a practicing Mahayana Buddhist in the tradition of the Vietnamese Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh. He is one of the founding members, and is the current president, of the Mindfulness Community of Milwaukee. A teacher of Mindfulness classes since 1996, he is also an instructor at the Mindfulness Center, teaching a variety of classes including Mindfulness In Everyday Life. He has spoken with many church, civic and academic groups about Mindfulness and Buddhist practice and has completed a three-month unit in Clinical Pastoral Education at St. Luke's Hospital. He was ordained as a core member of Thich Nhat Hanh's Order of Interbeing in 1999. He is also a pediatrician practicing developmental behavioral pediatrics and is the father of two young adult children.
